The Administration Inaugurates: “Book Houses”
April 23 – World Book Day
On April 23, we celebrate World Book and Copyright Day, established by UNESCO in 1995 with the primary goal of promoting reading. To celebrate, the Municipal Administration will inaugurate four new “Book Houses”—bookcrossing stations dedicated to the free exchange of volumes for readers of all ages: “Take a book, Leave a book.”
The initiative is part of a project promoted by the Documentary Network of the Province of Pistoia and, specifically, the “Leandro Magnani” Library of Montecatini Terme, with the aim of taking reading outside of institutional settings. Through these new tools, culture leaves the library walls and enters the daily life of various localities, even those furthest from the city center, becoming an opportunity for meeting, sharing, and participation.
Beatrice Chelli, Councilor for Culture and the Library, expresses great satisfaction, highlighting their strategic placement in the city. The four new installations have been placed:
- On Viale Verdi, adjacent to the Town Hall.
- In Via Marruota, near the Murialdo Oratory.
- In Montecatini Alto, in front of the Pro Loco headquarters.
- In Nievole, in the municipal garden facing the Church.
These “book houses” are part of a project aimed at making the book a common good, close and accessible, capable of animating urban spaces and fostering social interaction.
The installation of these “miniature libraries” is not merely an urban design intervention; it responds to a precise vision of cultural and social policy aimed at breaking down barriers to accessing knowledge. These “houses” act as outposts of democracy and social cohesion: they promote reading as a widespread habit, foster a sense of community through the sharing of knowledge, and restore value to leisure and waiting times.
It is an invitation to rediscover the pleasure of reading “at zero kilometers,” making the book a familiar, close object accessible to everyone, fundamental for the civil growth of the territory.
The inauguration will begin at 10:45 AM at the house next to the “Puccini Bench,” followed by Via Marruota, Nievole, and concluding in Montecatini Alto.
