“Two Great Stories”
On Friday, April 10, at 4:00 PM, the Council Chamber (Sala Consiliare) of the Town Hall will host the presentation of two books curated by the Proloco of Montecatini Alto and published in collaboration with the Department of Culture.
These works are reprints dedicated to two fundamental figures in the history of this UNESCO World Heritage city: the physician Ugolino Caccini (better known as Ugolino da Montecatini) and Peter Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany.
Born in Montecatini Alto in 1345, Ugolino is credited with the birth of Italian medical hydrology. He first promoted the therapeutic qualities of Montecatini’s waters in his 1417 treatise De balneorum Italiae proprietatibus ac virtutibus. Peter Leopold, in the last quarter of the 1700s, was the visionary founder of the thermal city in the valley at the foot of the ancient “Castello.”
Two extraordinary figures, two great stories, united by the foundation of Montecatini Terme’s fortune and fame: the benefits of its waters.
“Ugolino da Montecatini Terme – The First Great Thermal Physician” This is a reprint of the 2003 conference proceedings. It includes a detailed investigation of the historical and political context of the De balneorum, as well as a rare Italian translation of the original Latin treatise. This edition, celebrating the 600th anniversary of the physician’s death (1425–2025), is enriched with three new texts providing fresh historical contributions.
“The Leopoldine Refoundation” A reprint of the first section of the milestone book “Montecatini – 1771 – 1940: Birth of a Thermal City” by the late Prof. Carlo Cresti. This publication is part of the initiatives celebrating the 260th anniversary of Peter Leopold’s accession as Grand Duke of Tuscany.
The two volumes will be distributed to local schools to foster a sense of belonging and admiration among young generations.
Speakers: A distinguished group of local historians and experts: Paola Galassi Iozzelli, Amedeo Bartolini, Antonio Galassi, Bruna Rossi, Caterina Ranieri, Elisabetta De Troja, Roberto Pinochi, and Paolo Vincenti.
In the presence of Beatrice Chelli, Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Culture.
