On Friday, April 10, at 4:00 PM<\/strong>, the Council Chamber (Sala Consiliare)<\/strong> of the Town Hall will host the presentation of two books curated by the Proloco of Montecatini Alto<\/strong> and published in collaboration with the Department of Culture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

These works are reprints dedicated to two fundamental figures in the history of this UNESCO World Heritage<\/strong> city: the physician Ugolino Caccini<\/strong> (better known as Ugolino da Montecatini<\/strong>) and Peter Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine<\/strong>, Grand Duke of Tuscany.<\/p>\n

Born in Montecatini Alto in 1345, Ugolino<\/strong> is credited with the birth of Italian medical hydrology<\/strong>. He first promoted the therapeutic qualities of Montecatini\u2019s waters in his 1417 treatise De balneorum Italiae proprietatibus ac virtutibus<\/em>. Peter Leopold<\/strong>, in the last quarter of the 1700s, was the visionary founder of the thermal city in the valley at the foot of the ancient “Castello.”<\/p>\n

Two extraordinary figures, two great stories, united by the foundation of Montecatini Terme\u2019s fortune and fame: the benefits of its waters.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Ugolino da Montecatini Terme \u2013 The First Great Thermal Physician”<\/strong> This is a reprint of the 2003 conference proceedings. It includes a detailed investigation of the historical and political context of the De balneorum<\/em>, as well as a rare Italian translation<\/strong> of the original Latin treatise. This edition, celebrating the 600th anniversary<\/strong> of the physician’s death (1425\u20132025), is enriched with three new texts providing fresh historical contributions.<\/p>\n

“The Leopoldine Refoundation”<\/strong> A reprint of the first section of the milestone book “Montecatini \u2013 1771 \u2013 1940: Birth of a Thermal City”<\/em> by the late Prof. Carlo Cresti<\/strong>. This publication is part of the initiatives celebrating the 260th anniversary<\/strong> of Peter Leopold\u2019s accession as Grand Duke of Tuscany.<\/p>\n

The two volumes will be distributed to local schools<\/strong> to foster a sense of belonging and admiration among young generations.<\/p>\n

Speakers:<\/strong> A distinguished group of local historians and experts: Paola Galassi Iozzelli, Amedeo Bartolini, Antonio Galassi, Bruna Rossi, Caterina Ranieri, Elisabetta De Troja, Roberto Pinochi, and Paolo Vincenti.<\/strong><\/p>\n
